OVERVIEW

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a mid-20th century resort community that has successfully preserved its scale and character even as the surrounding communities underwent rapid development. Major features of the town include a fishing pier that extends almost 1,000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean and a living coral reef that attracts scuba divers from around the world. We worked with the town to identify downtown and economic development potentials while preserving the aesthetic character of the existing built environment.

The goal for the town was to become a more welcoming, attractive and vibrant waterfront community through aesthetic and circulation improvements, expansion of the economic base and development of more and better waterfront access. Our design principles guide the revitalization of the physical town; the economic approach was designed to increase the quantity and quality of the retail mix in the community. Numerous recommendations have been implemented since the plan was completed. When the pier was nearly demolished by an Atlantic storm, the town took advantage of a major water access opportunity and redeveloped it as a public park applying master plan design principles.
