This plan was developed for the Niagara Region of Ontario, an area with a population of upwards of 500,000 people and growing. To deal with the tremendous development pressure the report identifies “smart growth” techniques for the region’s 12 communities. It includes principles and policies for the Niagara Region using a smart development approach to help guide growth toward sustainability employing sound urban design principles. The report focused on five typical development types – suburban center, urban arterial, suburban shopping center, brownfield site and a greenfield site – and determined smart growth goals for each. The plan is transferrable to communities throughout the Region.
