OVERVIEW

Located on Confederation Boulevard across from Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the Capital Information Centre (CIC) is the primary welcoming venue for visitors to Canada’s national capital. As the designated urban design consultants to the National Capital Commission, peter j. smith and company developed alternative concepts and design guidelines for the forecourt plaza of the CIC. The concepts and design guidelines focused on celebrating the “story of Canada” through creative interpretation and innovative site design. A comprehensive analysis of urban context, circulation patterns, spatial function, views, sightlines and environmental conditions influenced the development of the concepts and design guidelines. The redevelopment strategy integrated facilities for public gathering, media events, special performances and an outdoor café, befitting the premier urban plaza in the nation’s capital.
