OVERVIEW

peter j. smith & company, inc. was retained to prepare a master plan for the redevelopment of an existing park into a premier recreation and community center in Orchard Park. The 105-acre park has an extensive floodplain and designated wetland. The $20 million proposal is being developed to create a health and wellness themed facility which will serve as a focal point in the community. Master Plan components include a field house and gymnasium for indoor sports such as basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and volleyball; a community center with meeting rooms for seniors and children’s activities; a 25-yard pool; a spray pad; a trail system with both paved and unpaved paths; a dog park, a performance quality amphitheater and a new football field.

The project involved development of the site master plan and design program as well as identification of special design and environmental considerations. Phasing for the proposed improvements, including cost summaries and cost projections were prepared for each of three recommended phases. Analyses of a town recreation survey, competing and complementary facilities, comparable case studies and trends in recreation and leisure contributed to the feasibility of the proposed improvements.
