Black Rock Canal Park is Buffalo’s most visible waterfront property. Located between the Niagara River and Interstate 190, the property, currently known as the Ontario Street Boat Launch currently contains a neglected boat launch, parking area and trail. We were engaged to help flesh out a site plan proposed by a grassroots organization. The updated plan includes “daylighting” of a waterway currently used as a sewer outfall; preserving and enhancing Cornelius Creek is a signature of the plan. Other plan elements include a reconfigured boat launch, a public concession, event center, extensive interpretive features, a waterfront boardwalk, a, stabilized waterfront bulkhead and a reconfigured “Riverwalk” multi-use trail.

The project includes eight potential phases and takes in the “big picture” issue of linkages to other waterfront features in Buffalo as well as to other public space. A complete site assessment and inventory, site conditions analysis and circulation analysis were included in the project. Cost projections for each phase were also prepared. All design components will utilize “green” technologies to make the project a show piece of sustainable practices.
