Destination: Blueway is a waterfront recreation plan for the Villages of Carthage and West Carthage at the hub of the Black River in New York State’s North Country. The Black River’s waterfront in the villages is rich in natural beauty and, as the terminus of the historic Black River Canal, industrial heritage features as well. The location on two state-designated scenic byways and at the gateway to the Adirondack Mountains gives it a regional focus.
Destination: Blueway implements an important phase of the Black River Blueway Plan. It features interpretation of the region’s unique natural, cultural and historic resources. Other plan elements include a waterfront trail linking the villages through a series of themed areas, new river access sites, a Blueway Trail Interpretive Center and waterfront retail. The Plan promotes economic development by enhancing the visitor market and developing the area as a four season destination on the scenic Black River.
