OVERVIEW

peter j. smith & company, inc., is the contracted urban designers for the City of Hamilton. In the spring of 2011, our firm began work on detailed urban design guidelines for the Village of Ancaster, a historic community located atop the Niagara Escarpment. Rich in heritage resources, the design guidelines focus on preserving and enhancing the positive character features of Ancaster which define its identity as a livable and attractive community.

The guidelines will help achieve the future vision for the Village and will provide direction on how
buildings, sites, and public spaces should be designed to ensure they are compatible with the scale and character of the community. Through the use of drawings, photographs and text, the guidelines illustrate and describe important design elements that combine to create a desirable and appropriate built form for Ancaster. In support of the design guidelines, a series of urban design schematic plans were developed to identify opportunities to enhance the function and physical organization of the Village.
